Costa Rica is one of the more prosperous countries in Central America, thanks to a peaceful history of democracy. The country has even been compared to Switzerland, not for any geographic resemblances but because the country and its inhabitants get along well with each other and with their neighbors. They do not even have a standing army. For this reason, tourists and expatriates love to come to Costa Rica, flying into the international airport near San Josè, capital of the country. From this centrally located area, all of the natural wonders are easily reached, and every town and city boasts of some historical buildings from all periods of the past. Coffee is one of Costa Rica’s main exports and there are many coffee plantations in these foothills, as well as citrus orchards. The city of some 50,000 inhabitants is a modern one, but has many buildings dating from the 18th century, including the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.
