It is a 7- or 8-hour drive from San José to Golfito (and of course, vice versa). There’s bus service between the two cities, but frankly if you want to visit Golfito, either as a tourist or as prospective retiree or for a commercial enterprise, it really makes more sense to take a plane into the town’s Domestic Airport. The flight – and the time getting to and from the airport, is only a couple of hours. Lots for sale in Golfito Costa Rica attract buyers from many different countries, who come to this region for many different reasons. The commercial possibilities – either in the hospitality industry or the commercial fishing industry, are definitely there, and there are many reasons why people would also want to make their residence here.
The Costa Rica Coast Guard Academy is headquartered in Golfito, so this town of some 7,000 residents has a bit of a “college town” flair, although obviously men and women who want to go into their country’s Coast Guard are not quite like your typical college kids. (Costa Rica has no standing army, but it requires a coast guard to help the commercial and sport fishermen along its coasts, and also, unfortunately it is necessary for drug interdiction.) Golfito lots are available in different zoning areas, either for residential or commercial use. There are also two marinas here. Golfito is described as a “strip town,” much longer than it is wide, and is backed by lush forests and by Golfito mountain.
