Many people choose to live in the relatively smaller city of Cartago than the nearby city of San José. San José is the capital of the country and is full of hustle and bustle, traffic congestion and pollution. On the other hand, Cartago is much more laidback, and the people welcoming and friendly. Like most cities in Costa Rico, Cartago depends a great deal on tourist dollars, although agriculture and technology are two integral parts of the economy as well. Representative villas in Cartago Costa Rica are less expensive than those in San José, as well. Cartago has a higher elevation than the nearby San José, and so its weather is much cooler and less muggy. Cartago is over 400 years old, and still has a few colonial buildings (albeit restored) but it is a completely modern city with all the necessities such as shopping centers, movie theaters, restaurants and a hospital.
Because of Cartago’s central location, and proximity to the airport at San José, it is popular with people who want the convenience of living in a big city that nevertheless seems like a small city, with the ability to catch a plane or drive to the coasts or other tourist areas for a weekend getaway. People who wish Cartago villas will find that they are available in all neighborhoods and in all price ranges. Cartago is home to one of only two basilicas in Costa Rica. Tourist spots include Las Ruinas de la Parroqia, actually an unfinished church rather than a ruined one (and ghost hunters will enjoy looking for the ghost of a headless priest which wanders the grounds whenever the fog rolls in.
