The city of Heredia, with some fifty thousand inhabitants, is the capital of the province of the same name. This capital city is located almost in the center of the country, and is just 10 kilometers north of San Jose, capital of Costa Rica itself. San Jose has five times the population as Heredia, and many people prefer the laid back lifestyle of the smaller city, but are glad to have the convenience of the larger one when they wish a change of pace. Heredia, founded in the 1700s, possesses some of the oldest remaining colonial architecture in the country, as well as the best preserved. But it is also a modern city, and boasts all of the amenities that today’s travelers and expatriates expect. Because it is a university town (home to the National University of Costa Rica) it also has a somewhat Bohemian atmosphere and there are a wide variety of restaurants and nightlife to suit every taste. Heredia homes abound in the picturesque setting of the foothills, where taxes and services such as electricity and water are quite inexpensive.
