University towns have a flavor all their own, and Heredia is no exception. Students attending the National University of Costa Rica (some 12,000 every year) come from all over the world. As a result, Heredia has a freshness and a nightlife that is quite unique. The city of course embraces the future but it has not forgotten its past. Several of the best preserved Colonial buildings are located in Heredia, including its imposing Basila. In addition to its night life, Heredia also offers shopping malls, movie theatres, and a variety of restaurants. Anyone interested in rentals in Heredia Costa Rica will want to check out properties in the best neighborhoods, that offer spectacular views of the valley far below. Getting around Heredia is easy, there are plenty of buses. Buses also serve other cities throughout the country, and there is also a train service.
Heredia was founded by Spanish colonizers in 1706, although it was not officially called Heredia until about thirty years later. Not much architecture exists from this early time period, but what does exist is pretty well preserved. At one point, for a brief period, Heredia was actually the capital of Costs Rica. San Josè, 11 kilometers south of Heredia, has been the capital since 1823. San Josè is Costa Rica’s largest city, with over 288,000 inhaabitants, so it can get congested and there’s a bit of pollution. For this reason, many people prefer Heredia rentals because that city is more relaxed and easy going. However, anyone who feels the need can quickly travel into San Josè for whatever they desire.
