The city of Cartago, which is located 14 miles southeast of Costa Rica’s capital of San José, is the country’s oldest city. As a matter of fact, Cartago was the capital of the country until 1823. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1565, some 450 years ago. Most of the original colonial buildings were damaged in an earthquake in 1910, but many of them have been restored. The prestigious Costa Rica Institute of Technology, one of Central America’s best engineering schools, was founded here in 1961.The city is also home to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles. This basilica was completed in 1639 and its design comprises a mix of colonial architecture and the 19th century Byzantine style. Pilgrims visit this basilica regularly.
Tourists enjoy coming to Cartago for many reasons, but not the least because it is situated at the foot of the Irazú Volcano. Irazú , part of Irazú Volcano National Park, is an active volcano, but it hasn’t erupted since 1994. Tourists can drive right up to the summit, which is usually not visible from the city because of its cloud cover. Because of Cartago’s proximity to San José, most tourists fly into that city and head to Cartago from there. Cartago condos can be situated in any number of different regions within the city, and are available at all price levels. Cartago is the capital of Cartago province, and tourists also come to see the dense tropical rainforests which line the nearby mountain ranges, and the flora and fauna within.
