Costa Rica is a relatively tiny country on the Central American isthmus, located between Guatemala to the north and Panama to the south. It shares its western coast with the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast with the Caribbean Sea. Golfito is situated on the southwest coast of Costa Rica, very near the border with Panama. As its name implies it overlooks a small gulf (which in turn opens out onto the larger Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf)). Until 1985 Golfito was the home of the United Fruit Company, which specialized in banana crops. Golfito condos are therefore popular not only with tourists who wish to rent such a facility as a place to stay while they go sport fishing, but also with tourists who want to explore the nearby Piedras Blancas (White Stones) National Park. Wildlife and bird watching can also be done at nearby San Vito. Because Golfito has an airstrip, it is easy to fly here from San José – much better than trying to drive!
