The town of Golfito – it consists of some 7,000 inhabitants – is located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, very near the border with Panama. Its name means “Little gulf,” because its gulf opens out into the much larger Gulfo Dulce, which separates the Peninsula de Osa from the mainland. Golfito is located on the mainland. Up until 1985, growing bananas was the industry in Golfito and its surrounding regions, but today it has been superseded by tourism. Homes for sale in Golfito Costa Rica have been purchased by émigrés from other countries who come here to retire, as well as by folks who just want a wonderful vacation home – and of course by people who come to Golfito to enter the hospitality industry.
Golfito is described by the guidebooks as “rustic,” and while it does maintain this flavor which makes it so appealing, it does of course have all the modern conveniences that one would expect from a town which owes much of its current prosperity to the tourist trade. Golfito can actually be called the staging point for travel in this area, as people fly into its Domestic Airport which is much preferable than an 8 hour drive from San José. Golfito homes come in all sizes, for a single person just starting out, to a small family dwelling, to luxurious villas. The homes can have views of Little Bay, or of the forests surrounding the city on its northern side. There is beauty wherever one looks in Golfito.
