Costa Rica is a small country – in fact it is about the size of West Virginia. It is bordered to the north by Nicaragua and to the south by Panama. The country is located in Central America which is an isthmus, meaning “a narrow strip of land that connects two larger land areas, with water on either side.” As far as Costa Rica is concerned, that means it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to its west and the Caribbean Sea to its east. Many visitors to Costa Rica head for the coasts in order to go surfing, scuba diving, or sport fishing. The gateway to Costa Rica’s “Gold Coast” – the Pacific Coast, is Liberia, thanks to its international airport that was built in 1995 (and recently expanded). A map of Liberia Costa Rica will not reveal Costa Rica’s history, but it will help make that history come alive. It will also help future tourists to the country figure out which places they want to visit, and when, to get the most out of their tourist dollars.
Liberia is not only the gateway to Costa Rica’s “Gold Coast”, but also to the country of Nicaragua. Indeed, until 1826 Liberia and the province of Guanacaste was part of Nicaragua. Today, Liberia is a prosperous city of some 40,000 people – which of course swells during tourist season. There are plenty of hotels, bed and breakfasts, and other tourist accommodations in the city. Liberia has plenty of restaurants, movie theaters, and grocery stores, as well as a brand new hospital. A Liberia map can be quite useful, because unlike most Costa Rican cities, Liberia actually has a great many street signs to help people get around. There are a couple of museums in Liberia, including the Sabanero museum (a cowboy museum – Liberia is known for its cattle ranching) and of course it is surrounded by volcano national parks and wildlife reserves.
