San José, the capital of Costa Rica, and its Juan Santamaría International Airport, is the gateway for tourists to discover and explore all the natural wonders that this small country in Central America has to offer. Few tourists spend much time in San José, their goal is to get to either the west or the east coast, or to one of the volcano national parks San José with its over 200,000 inhabitants is like any other huge city around the world, but the rest of Costa Rica has unique wonders found nowhere else in such abundance. Tambor is a small fishing village turned tourist mecca on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, sharing a coastline with the Pacific Ocean. In the early 1970s, Tambor was a humble fishing village of some 600-or-so inhabitants. However, Costa Rica’s government decided to make special efforts to develop the country’s tourism industry, and Tambor and the surrounding regions – not to mention all of the western coast of the Nicoya peninsula, have benefitted from that effort. Tambor land can be situated near Whale Bay (more properly known as Ballena Bahia) or on the other side of the town with views of lush green hills. There is plenty to see and do around Tambor. Swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving, as well as boating, are of course popular past times, but visitors – and residents – can also play golf, or visit nearby nature reserves. Reaching Tambor is easy – flights from San José take only about 49 minutes.
