Arenal Volcano rises from the northern end of the Tilarin Mountain Range – one of the four mountain ranges in Costa Rica. When it began to erupt in 1968 – and continued to erupt on practically a daily basis thereafter – tourism to the area boomed. Although Arenal stopped erupting in 2010, tourism to the area has remained uninterrupted because there is now so much to see and do here. All of the towns in the area benefitted from the influx of tourists and several biological preserves were set up to protect the natural habitat – but at the same time allow people to easily see the birds and wildlife in this area – not to mention the scenery. Real estate in Arenal Costa Rica is therefore on offer in many of these towns – such as La Fortuna, Tilaran, San Rafael and Quesada.
The inhabitants of La Fortuna live underneath the shadow of Arenal – in its foothills. The town itself doesn’t have much of historical interest, but it Is extremely popular as a base in which to visit Arenal and the biological preserves in the area. Not to mention the lake. Arenal Costa Rica properties in this large town are therefore quite popular, either for people who wish to live there year round, or for people who wish to rent the property out to others as part of the hospitality industry. There is regular bus service from San José to La Fortuna, and people of course rent cars in San José – Costa Rica’s capital, and make the two hour drive up to La Fortuna all the time. It’s also possible to fly into a couple of private airports there.
